40 River Street, Norwell was the home of the former Norwell Police Station. After the police station was relocated, the 20,000 sf building sat abandoned on the 2.5 acre lot.
Due to real estate tax increases, Norwell was becoming unaffordable for many seniors. The town decided to repurpose the old police station into affordable housing for local seniors.
The developer, Metro West Community Development, raised funding for this project from the Department of Housing and Community Development and Norwell’s Community Preservation Act Fund.
The existing 20,000 square foot building was razed and the site prepped to make way for a new four-story, 18-unit wood framed building consisting of 14 one-bedroom apartments, and four two-bedroom apartments; three of the units are fully handicap-accessible. The building will have daily property staff, and the developers are planning to have regular program offerings in conjunction with South Shore Elder Services, the Norwell Council on Aging, and the Norwell Visiting Nurses Association.
Curtis Construction began construction in September 2018 and completion is anticipated for late summer 2019.
